Diane Farris Gallery is pleased to announce it’s 13th solo exhibition of Canadian artist Angela Grossmann.
Paper Dolls is new series of figurative works by Vancouver-based artist Angela Grossmann. From an intense collision of ideas and materials, Grossmann constructs parallel metaphors for the emotional world of young teen girls. The images are lush with painterly textures and the fine details of plaid, lace and gingham.Her fictional people have an extraordinarily presence and sense of wholeness, although they have been collaged from dozens of photo fragments that she has merged, emphasized and enhanced with paint. They speak of both a passionate creative process and the ever-shifting world of social status, fashion and identity among the “paper dolls” of 2006. She describes her work as “theatre” in the sense that each figure and each group, wholly conceived and costumed by Grossmann, reflects the social construction of issues facing young people. New images on vintage music posters further emphasize the moral distance from the ethos of the 1950s, when the concept of the “teenager” was created. The internationally recognized artist has explored coming-of-age themes in earlier shows, including Alpha Girls (2004) and Thirteen (2002-3). She has devoted much of her career to examining themes of displacement and social margins.After earning an MFA at Concordia University and teaching at Ottawa University, Grossmann returned to Vancouver in 1996 to paint and to teach at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design. Diane Farris Gallery has represented Angela Grossmann dating from the gallery’s inception in 1984 with twelve solo shows and numerous group exhibits. Her work has been exhibited widely across Canada, the United States and Europe. As a member of the artist group known as Futura Bold, Grossmann recently participated in Vancouver School, a massive sculptural installation at the Artists for Kids Gallery, North Vancouver.

Starfish Glassworks Summer Show Season

Naoko Takenouchi is well known internationally, for her ‘twig vase’ series of function-denied vessels with intricate imagery rendered in marvellously detailed sandblasting upon the surfaces. Her show; Bird on a Wing: Migratory Journeys reflects her Japanese heritage while presenting the viewer with a contemporary glass artist’s vision of her world. The work for this show addresses her fascination with natural processes, specifically the annual migration of many species of birds and how we in our technology-infused existence have lost touch with our instinctual responses. “… when I think about the creative process, it is about listening to my inner voice and navigating my way through my senses. In this there is something quite similar to the migration of wildlife.” We have only had a glimpse of the two pieces that were photographed for the invitation but if these two are any indication, we are in for a sublime, sensitive and gorgeous show. Naoko’s masterful command of a difficult medium and the integrity with which she expresses her concerns are an inspiration for her fellow artists and a delight for all who encounter her work.

Natali Rodrigues. Her show of cast glass sculpture is called With an Open Heart: Begegnung*. Natali is one of the most highly educated glass artist’s in Canada, having received her MFA from Canberra last year. She can also be considered an emerging artist because she has only been exhibiting for a few years. Natali specializes in simple kiln cast glass forms in lovely ethereal colours and she hand works the surfaces to a velvety gloss that invites tactile experience. “The last three bodies of work that I have done are all based on the experience of a moment of grace. These new pieces are exploring a collision or a coming together, a communion of sorts, which is why the objects are in pairs or in threes… the forms are full, in light and in shape.
My work is an attempt to create a system of cartography of liminal space, where what is marked is not in reference to the physical but rather those points where the divine is encountered.”
*begegnung is German for meeting

We are happy to announce the first solo show of Calgary artist Lisa Cerny. Lisa has been making incredible vessels with engraved imagery for a few years and finally accepted the challenge to show off her impressive skills at illustration and glass blowing. Her show Portraits and Pachyderms has, as you might suspect, a double theme. The portraits come from different influences, either from her reading or from her musical background. “I love reading biographies… When I read a story that inspires or excites me, I feel like I've been given a gift, and that notion of sharing resonates in my work. I combine both my drawing skills and my blowing skills to create what I hope are attractive, interesting pieces that exhibit both a level of skill and a sense of intimacy.”
The elephants are another life-long interest. Lisa uses silver foil and its tendency to crack as it stretches over a blown form to echo the lovely tactile quality of the elephants’ skin. She strives to capture the sensitive nature of the massive and fascinating animal that is revered in many of the cultures to which it is indigenous. “I see this show as a kind of "coming out" for me. It's my first solo show with this scope of work, and I'm very excited but equally nervous. It's time to see where my ten-year apprenticeship has gotten me!”

Philippe was transported on M.I.P. (is back) from Bordeaux in France where he started developing a body of work inspired by pop art and culture. His vibrant colours and unique iconic abstractions have shaped into rugs, jewellery, wine art bottles, smart cars and canvases. Hipposnagon, Snearthquake, U.F. Ool are the subjects to a vivid and fantastic world. Sokazo is presenting us with a world of colour and joy, a video game still if you prefer or a polaroid of a surreal landing. - not to be missed-

A PUBLIC DISCUSSION with the artists of CONTAINER CULTURE: IN[ ]EX

The public sphere is rapidly being privatized and now reflects more on the movement of goods and capital than on the expression of individual rights. Presented in conjunction with UBC’s Living the Global City Lecture Series and the 2006 World Urban Forum, this public discussion among artists Kate Armstrong, Bobbi Kozinuk, M. Simon Levin, Laurie Long, Leonard Paul, Manuel Piña, Jean Routhier, and curator Alice Ming Wai Jim will speak to “container culture” and the social forces at play in IN[ ]EX, their new interactive, city-wide media art project to be launched next month at Centre A and the World Urban Festival.

IN[ ]EX is a distributed audio sculpture involving a shipping container and thousand of wooden blocks with embedded technology that are released into the city to engage the public as active agents. IN[ ]EX invites audience activity, movement and interaction, as well as engages with the larger urban context as the blocks are dispersed throughout the city and culture in general. This project is sponsored by the Canada Council, the British Columbia Arts Council, the City of Vancouver through the Office of Cultural Affairs, and the Province of British Columbia through the Spirit of BC Arts Fund.

“With wavering clarity we understand that what we do is confined to the limitations of representation and we’re okay with that. As a product and service Instant Coffee is an effective substitute: it mimics the real thing without the pretense of being better. It isn’t that much easier to make, which is reason enough to justify it. Taste is a factor, taste being an important way to designate quality and define preference. But quality is too particular and preferences change. They are superfluous really, misnomers that distract from the basic reasons for ingesting either the real thing or its substitute. Value is in their effect. In its taste, Instant Coffee barely resembles the real thing, but its effect is the same. Regardless of taste, it still works. Quality is beside the point. In this disregard Instant Coffee becomes a medium to be used.
